The theme for this month’s zine is ‘Island of Misfit Toys.’ Here’s an Italian sonnet I wrote for it.
Advent, Day 1
Within its copper vault it hibernates
held still in black and chill and heat and dust
until the clock hums twelve and then it must
awake and peek through its rusty gates.
Behind two dozen tarnished doors it waits
in lonely rank and file, all set to thrust
its labyrinth coils (ablaze with wanderlust)
into the brave, awash with spectral lights.
Our metal mouse, anxious, awaits the chime;
the hour of the wolf creeps slowly near.
The jaws, held wide, snaps shut on quiet air
and from the door marked “4” it leaps on time:
its mismatched hatches glaring in the mirror
though drunken gods are far too gone to care.
